Along with the jubilant declaration of a new relationship on Facebook also comes the unfortunate possibility of an announcement of separation. "The New York Times" reports that 44 million Facebook users changed their status to "single" in 2010. Whether announcing a divorce, a widowing or a break up, an official Facebook status change will occur if the couple noted or linked the relationship on the couple's profiles. Visibility options are available to those who prefer a less prominent breakup.
- Navigate and log in to Facebook.
- Click "Edit My Profile" located under the user's Facebook name in the upper left-hand corner of the interface.
- Locate and click the "Friends and Family" link. It is the third link down on the left-hand side of the screen. This will display the current relationship settings.
- Click the drop-down menu next to "Relationship Status."
- Click on the appropriate relationship status. If the user selects "single," "divorced," "separated" or "widowed," Facebook will display, "Your relationship with ____ will be canceled upon saving." Other options require a confirmation from the partner. Selecting the blank at the top will completely remove the relationship status from the profile.
- Click "Save Changes" located at the bottom of the page.
- Removing the Status Update from the Profile and News Feed
- Click on "View My Profile" located on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Click on the link to the Facebook wall. The new relationship status update will be posted on the partner's walls and in the News Feed.
- Hover the cursor over the "x" on the right-hand side of the relationship status update post. "Remove Post" will appear.
- Click "Yes" when prompted to delete the post. This action will remove the post from the user's wall and the public News Feed.
