How to Manage Your Jealousy

Whether you are jealous of your coworker's promotion or your boyfriend's beautiful ex-friend girlfriend who he is still friends with, jealousy can be a very frustrating experience. According to "Psychology Today," jealousy is frequently experienced as a "painful and crazy feeling." While jealousy is a common emotion, it can cause stress in romantic relationships, family relationships and friendships. However, you can create a plan to reduce jealous feelings, and get on with your life.

  1. Do not beat yourself up about being jealous. Recognize that jealousy is a common emotion, and everyone experiences it once in awhile. The key is to not allow jealousy to take over your life.
  2. Talk to your partner if you feel jealous in your romantic relationship. Express the reasons why you feel jealous, and how it negatively affects you. For example, you can say, "I feel jealous when you go out with your friends each night, and never invite me to go with. I feel like you are hiding something." After you give your explanation of why you are jealous, listen to his response. He may have a reasonable explanation, and it may put your mind at ease.
  3. Turn your jealousy into a positive force if you are envious of your coworker's promotion or professional achievement, suggests the Mendoza College of Business of the University of Notre Dame. Divert energy into your current project, or use the time you spend feeling jealous to take a business training class that will help you get ahead in your workplace.
  4. Pretend you are not a jealous person. Although you may feel jealousy, "Psychology Today" recommends adopting a "fake it until you make it" habit that forces you to pretend you are not jealous. The positive outlook may also improve your partner's mood, especially if she is tired of facing your accusations every time you see each other.
