How to Approach Your Dad About a Boyfriend

For many young women, talking to parents about relationships is an important part of dating. Whether it's a matter of dealing with a problem, getting relationship advice or finding out what they think about a new boyfriend, the input of parents can be of real importance. If you're wondering how to talk to your dad about your boyfriend, you can try identifying the purpose of the conversation, naming your emotions, and choosing the right time to talk.

  1. Identify the purpose of the conversation. If you want to tell your dad how well the relationship is going, then perhaps you need him to simply listen. If you and your boyfriend are having problems, then you need advice. Or if you feel like the relationship is taking you in the wrong direction and you don't know what to do, perhaps your dad can help you get back on track. Having a clear idea of what you want the conversation to accomplish can help you organize your thoughts.
  2. Name your emotions. If you feel worried about what your dad will think, say something like, "Dad, I have something I need to talk about, and I'm afraid you'll be disappointed. Please listen to what I have to say." If you feel awkward or embarrassed to talk about your relationship, try saying, "This might sound kind of crazy, but I just wanted to tell you how happy I am right now."
  3. Choose the right time to talk. Try to find a time when your dad has some time and is in a frame of mind to listen. Car trips, errands, or lunches can be good opportunities to open up. If your situation requires a lengthy, in-depth conversation, it might be best to schedule some time with your dad in advance.
